Calculating Active Dog Calorie Needs
Active dogs can need 1.5x to 3x the calories of a sedentary dog of the same weight. A 50-pound couch potato needs about 1,000 calories/day, while a 50-pound agility competitor may need 2,500+.
The Performance Macro Split
| Activity Level | Protein | Fat | Carbs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moderate (daily walks, play) | 25–30% | 15–18% | Balance |
| High (running, agility, hiking) | 30–35% | 18–22% | Balance |
| Extreme (sled dogs, field trials) | 35–40% | 25–35% | Minimal |
Meal Timing Around Exercise
- Feed main meals 3-4 hours before intense exercise
- Small high-protein snack 30 min after exercise for recovery
- Always ensure water access before, during, and after activity
- Avoid large meals immediately after exercise (bloat risk)
